Understanding CPT-Codes

What is a CPT Code?

The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes offer doctors and health care professionals a uniform language for coding medical services and procedures to streamline reporting, increase accuracy and efficiency.

There are different Levels of CPT Codes for basic care, Starting at level 1 least intensive all the way to a level 5 which is an intense examination that would require a 75 min or more visit with the patient. I have never had a 30 min visit with a doctor let alone a 75 min visit. That may be the time I spent waiting in the lobby. Another reason why Teladoc added to your health plan is a good idea.

Obviously CPT code levels come with much different price tags! It is important to understand what level of care you received to get a fair and accurate price for the service performed. Doctors, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Nurse Practitioners, all have to sign off on documentation that they saw the patient and/or reviewed the record.

If you are charged at a level 4, but only spent 5 min with a NP should that classify as a level 4. In my opinion, Absolutely NOT! And requesting the medical records will prove your case.
